Women are pivotal contributors to society in their roles as mothers, individuals, family members and as citizens. When a women’s health is poor, her contribution to society is decreased. A women’s health is critical to the well-being of her family and the economy of her community and her country. Investing in the health of women is not only the right thing to do; it also builds stable, peaceful and productive societies. It reduces poverty and stimulates economic growth.

Sustainable economic growth cannot be achieved if women, who consist 28.50% of the workforce in India, are unable to fully participate in the economy due to health implications. Startling gender differentials and inequities in health exist which disadvantage women. For example, thyroid disorders affect five to eight times more women than men, and almost twice as many women who have heart attacks die within a year, compared to men. Yet, depending on where one lives and social norms, the initial diagnosis, treatment options, and clinical outcomes often favor men.

There is a clear linkage between higher levels of education and greater participation in paid employment and higher earnings. Iron deficiency and Non-Communicable Diseases are the most common disorders affecting women and children in developing economies. These diseases reduce the work capacity of individual, bringing serious economic consequences.

So how can we unleash the economic power of women? And how can governments, employers and other interested stakeholders partner to improve women’s health so women can live better lives and join – or remain – in the labor force?
